The painting – Inspired, but not limited by Tolkein’s works, the artist wanted to paint a variation on the “faces of nature”. This Old Man has a natural but obvious face in the painting, but he really comes to life when you add the mask! Painted in acrylic on 18″x24″ canvas.
The mask – Tolkien knew that there was more life in trees than meets they eye. This “Old Man” becomes spritely with the donning of his mask. This “Wood Man” mask is crafted of paper mache over a sturdy ABS plastic base formed from an original sculpture. Hand sculpted ‘bark’ and ‘twigs’ and an antiqued finish give him his distinctive look.
The frame – The frame for the “Old Man of the Wood” is a unique piece featuring a 3D forrest embedded in acrylic, surrounded by wooden trim. The construction of the frame causes the painting to look as if it is floating in the forrest scene. The wood portion of the frame is finished in durable poplar, and there are magnets mounted two locations in the frame to support the mask hooks either in front of the face or below the frame.
