This painting was inspired by the poem "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes. It is a beautifully haunting tale of a dashing highwayman and his love for Bess, the Landlord's daughter. Like all good tragic love stories this one comes to a sad end, but a ghostly one.

Here I have explored the end of the tale more and gave it a... sort of happy ending.
